I’m not one for new year’s resolutions. However, a few weeks ago I was thinking about Bowie’s β and made a conscious decision that I wanted to listen to that album. On a whim I created a “to listen” playlist in Plex with the idea that would find time to dip into that playlist sometime soon and revisit the album.
I almost always have something playing on my earbuds or in my home office or on the Sonos in the kitchen, but it’s either podcasts (many about music) or music on while I work or cook or go about my day. As the idea of when to listen to that playlist bounced around for a few more weeks I came to the realization that I rarely listen, actually actively listen, to music. The end of the year was nearing so I decided why not make a resolution to listen to a full album with no distractions on a regular basis. No phone, no laptop, not while cooking, or exercising – actually sitting down and listening to an album in its entirety. Something I do on a nearly daily basis is enjoy a cup of tea. So why not combine I do routinely and something I want to do on routine basis. And the idea of enjoying a cup of tea while listening an album was created.
I’m not someone who posts very much on social media I liked the idea of sharing what I’m listening to and drinking, and posting gives me some accountability to actually drink and listen on a regular basis. (Said many a lapsed blogger.) So here goesβ¦ Darjeeling Listening’s first post, with one twist, while I do enjoy tea on an almost daily basis, today turned out to be a day that visited a coffee shop with my partner for a “let’s not work from home” day, so I’m enjoying a delicious sweet ginger latte and Bowie’s β

Mdou Moctar was interesting last night. Bluesy, psychedelic guitars. But a bit to “jam band-y” for my taste, lots of long guitar jams, very few vocals. Full room for the show.

“No seriously, were doing this in reverse, this is your exit music”
He just talked between songs, not introducing the songs or at the audience, but about what was on his mind or what he did today. The room was packed (every seat was taken, people were sitting along both aisles), it was dead quiet, almost no one took pictures, he sang half the songs to a backing track – the audience wouldn’t clap until the music finally faded to quiet.
